There are 18 species of bat in the UK, all of which are expert insect hunters. They are sociable mammals and live in roosts. Hollow trees, caves, gaps behind tiles and building cavities all offer suitable roosts. Bat boxes can also be used as artificial roosts and are designed to encourage bats to roost where they may otherwise struggle to find a suitable site.
